Founded in 2006, MigraMar is an international network of scientists that work in research and migratory marine species conservation in the Eastern Tropical Pacific. Since 2015, PACIFICO and MigraMar have been building an alliance to strengthen inter-institutional efforts. This collaboration included developing their first five-year strategic plan and its operational financing for four years. We signed a donation agreement and an MOU which provides the framework for the joint work, including:
- MigraMar’s institutional strengthening through contracting collaborators, annual general assembly, carry out scientific research and publications, and participation in events and conferences to exchange information.
- Generation of scientific knowledge to help public authorities make more informed decisions. We support donations to MigraMar members to carry out research projects. Over the past three years, part of Dr. Alex Hearn’s work was funded in order to apply a new methodology for catch and release of hammerhead sharks (Sphyma lewini) in the Galapagos Islands; Dr. César Peñaherrera’s project to apply a new hammerhead population measurement approach that combines visual censuses with acoustic markers placed on 14 sharks off Malpelo Island in Colombia; and a project with Dr. Héctor Guzmán to acquire and use remote submarine cameras (BRUVS) in Coiba National Park and the Coiba-Malpelo Swimway.
- Develop an acoustic and satellite database that integrates information collected by researchers working with migratory marine species.
- Hold training workshops in advanced telemetry for scientists from diverse countries.
